Fodor's Review

Fabulous, pine-and palm-fringed Kommos lies below the site of a Minoan harbor where excavations are ongoing. At its far northern end lies the scrappy little resort of Kalamaki, where a few modest hotels and tavernas back the sand (some rent out umbrellas and lounges) and a simple taverna and a lounge-chair concession operates on the north end. But for the most part the beach is an unspoiled stretch of white sand washed by clear waters and backed by hills shaded with tamarac trees. Kommos is especially popular with nudists, and it's a nesting ground for the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta). Amenities: food and drink; parking (free); showers and toilets. Best for: solitude; nudists; sunset; swimming; walking.
