Staying at this small bed-and-breakfast, within a neoclassical house from the 1700s that has historical connections, feels like a crash course in Greek history, and its owner, Kyria Rena, is bubbly, sociable, and adored by all guests. When Aegina became the first capital of the newborn nation, shipping minister Admiral Kountouriotis lived here; at the beginning of the 1920s, poet Kostas Varnalis resided here for two years and was visited by author Nikos Kazantzakis. Today, the historical roots come alive in the breathtaking murals in rooms on the first floor and in antique furniture in the public salons, the shady internal garden, and the guest rooms. Breakfast includes mouth-watering orange cake and a delicious cheese pie.
