Karavitis

Karavitis Review

The winter dining room maintains its prewar ambience ("since 1926") and is insulated with huge wine casks; in summer there is garden seating in a courtyard across the street (get there early so you don't end up at the noisy sidewalk tables). The classic Greek cuisine is well prepared, including pungent tirokafteri (a peppery cheese dip), bekri mezes (lamb chunks in zesty red sauce), lamb ribs (when in season), stamnaki (beef baked in a clay pot), and melt-in-the-mouth meatballs, the taverna's specialty. Regarded as this neighborhood favorite hangout, —Greek politicians are frequently seen to enjoy a meal here—is located near the Panathenaic Stadium.

One of Athens' gems! This is NOT a tourist trap and is almost every evening full with locals, who wish to dine in a quiet and comfortable place away from hectic Plaka... The staff is friendly and the food just right, if greek kitchen is what you're looking for!

My wife and I went for dinner and we would NOT recommend it.
    1. Location: at the end of a residential street with dificult to see sign. No public traspostation close by.
    2. Food - everything we ate was average
    3. Wine - house wine over priced
    4. Service - average to poor if you do speak the language.
Do not bother going there. Lots of better choices in the Plaka area.
