This small, luxurious hotel on the wooded slopes of Mt. Lycabettus, in upscale Kolonaki, is steps from Athens's museum row and designer shops. Most rooms have splendid views; all are meticulously decorated. Each floor has its own theme, and rooms are designed accordingly, with looks ranging from jewel-tone art nouveau to sleek black-and-white minimalism to soothing neutrals with bamboo. The rooftop pool bar and Le Grand Balcon restaurant have an unbeatable panoramic view. Downstairs the postmodern 1970s-style lounge, Frame, is one of the hottest nightspots in town.

The way this hotel is described, it's like this is the most wonderful hotel ever. It's ok. The breakfast and the view from the restaurant it's in are great (bring your camera to breakfast.) But the rooms are so-so - very typical European hotel rooms. The staff is a bit snarly but it is Greece, after all. From the reviews I thought I'd get a little more. Beware if you're adverse to exercise - the climb to the hotel from just about anywhere is a bit of a workout.
