Maximilianstrasse

Maximilianstrasse Review

Most of the city's sights are on Augsburg's main shopping street or a short walk away. It was once a medieval wine market along the Roman road. Two monumental and elaborate fountains punctuate the long street. At the north end is the Merkur, designed in 1599 by the Dutch master Adrian de Vries (after a Florentine sculpture by Giovanni da Bologna), which shows winged Mercury in his classic pose. Farther up Maximilianstrasse is another de Vries fountain: a bronze Hercules struggling to subdue the many-headed Hydra.
