The Romantic Road Places

Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein

Getting Here and Around

From Schwangau (5 km [3 mi] north of Füssen, 103 km south of Augsburg, 121 km southwest of Munich), follow the road signs marked "Königschlösser" (King's Castles). After 3 km (2 mi) you come to Hohenschwangau, a small village consisting of a few houses, some good hotels, and five spacious parking lots (parking €4.50). You have to park in one of them and then walk to the ticket center serving both castles. If you are staying in Füssen, take the bus to Hohenschwangau. The clearly marked bus leaves from the train station in Füssen every hour from morning to night, and the cost is €1.60 per person one-way. Tickets are for timed entry, and the average wait to enter Neuschwanstein is one hour. With a deposit or credit-card number you can book your tickets in advance for either castle through the ticket center. You can change entrance times or cancel up to two hours before the confirmed entrance time. The main street of the small village Hohenschwangau is lined with restaurants and quick eateries of all categories.
