The episcopal city of Fulda is well worth a detour off the Fairy-Tale Road. There are two distinct parts to its downtown area. One is a stunning display of baroque architecture, replete with cathedral, orangerie, and formal garden, that grew up around the palace. The other is the Old Town, where the incredibly narrow and twisty streets are lined with boutiques, bistros, and a medieval tower. You'll find Kanalstrasse and Karlstrasse in the Old Town lined with good but inexpensive cafés and restaurants, ranging from German to Mediterranean.
