For those in search of a lively city atmosphere, Freiburg is the obvious base from which to explore the region. Baden-Baden is another charming place with all facilities on tap.

Bear in mind however, that driving times and distances push the farthest points out of reach on easy day trips from these cities. The winding and often steep nature of many Black Forest highways can have a dramatic impact on average speeds when you're planning journeys, so you may want to consider adding overnight stays at other locations. Freudenstadt's vast market square lends it a uniquely pleasant atmosphere; Triberg's mountain location is very popular, but it remains picturesque; and Hinterzarten offers sub-Alpine vistas and is a great place for visiting the Titisee once all the day-trippers have left.
