Albertinum

Fodor's Review:

The Albertinum is named after Saxony's King Albert, who between 1884 and 1887 converted a royal arsenal into a suitable setting for the treasures he and his forebears had collected. This massive, imperial-style building usually houses Dresden's leading art museum, one of the world's great galleries. However, the Albertinium will be closed for renovation until 2009. Until then selected pieces of the collection will be on display as special exhibits. The Skulpturensammlung will be exhibited as a constantly changing selection of pieces called Sculpture in the Zwinger. At this writing, the disposition of the Gemäldegalerie Neue Meister (Gallery of Modern Masters) was still undecided. The collection, which includes outstanding works by German masters of the 19th and 20th centuries (Caspar David Friedrich's haunting Das Kreuz im Gebirge, for example) and French impressionists and postimpressionists, will probably be phased into the Zwinger complex.
