The Nationalpark covers 97 square km (37 square mi) of the region. Thanks to its inaccessibility, Saxon Switzerland is home to game and many other wild animals (such as the lynx) that are otherwise extinct in Germany. The park is divided into two parts, which can be explored by foot, either following marked routes or by registering with the park rangers for guided tours. To reach the park from Dresden, drive southeast on B-172 toward Pirna, or take the S-bahn from the central train station to Königsstein or Bad Schandau; both towns are served by buses and minitrains. The train ride itself takes close to an hour.
