The Origins of the Meissen Fummel
At the beginning of the 18th century, the Great Elector of Saxony routinely sent proclamations by messenger to his subjects in Meissen. The messengers were known to chase women and behave poorly, often drinking so much of the famous Meissen wine that their horses were the only ones who remembered the way back to Dresden. To curb this behavior, the elector charged the bakers of Meissen with creating an extremely fragile cake, which the messengers would have to remain sober enough to deliver to the elector intact. Today, the Meissner Fummel remains a local specialty.
