Eastern Germany is a small, well-connected region that's well suited for day trips. Dresden and Leipzig are the largest cities with the most facilities, making them good bases from which to explore the surrounding countryside, either by car or train. Both are well connected with Berlin, Munich, and Frankfurt. Any of the smaller towns offer a quieter, possibly more authentic look at the area. A trip into the Salle-Unstrut is well worth the time, with Naumburg as a base.
