Saxony with Leipzig and Dresden: By Train

Arriving & Departing By Air By Train

By Train

The fastest and most inexpensive way to explore the region is by train. All cities are connected by a network of trains and some -- Dresden and Meissen, for example -- by commuter trains. Slower D- and E-class or InterRegio trains link smaller towns. From Dresden a round-trip ticket to Leipzig costs about EUR 36.60 (a 1 1/2-hour journey one way); to Görlitz, EUR 32.20 (a 1 1/2-hour ride). Trains connect Leipzig and Halle (a 30-minute ride, EUR 10) or Erfurt (a 1-hour ride, EUR 25) and Eisenach (a 1 1/2-hour journey, EUR 33). The train ride between Dresden and Eisenach (2 1/2 hours) costs EUR 49 one way.

Consider using the Sachsen Ticket, a EUR 26 offer from the German Railroad. The ticket is valid on any weekday after 9 AM for a group of up to five people on any RE, RB, or S train in Saxony, Saxony Anhalt, or Thuringia. On weekends and public holidays the ticket is valid before 9. The ticket is available at any counter of the German Railroad and from many ticket machines (where it costs EUR 24).
