Bavaria's capital has an enviable reputation as an artistic hot spot. Details of concerts and theater performances are listed in in münchen (free) and Monatsprogramm, booklets available at most hotel reception desks, newsstands, and tourist offices. Prinz magazine lists almost everything happening in the city, as do a host of other city magazines, while the superb and official city website (www.muenchen.de) has listings. Otherwise, just keep your eye open for advertising pillars and posters.
The Bayerischer Rundfunk is the city's public radio and TV broadcaster, which also oversees three musical organizations—the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Munich Radio Orchestra, and the Bavarian Radio Choir. Performances take place at Bayerischer Rundfunk and at other city venues, such as Gasteig. The box office is open Monday to Friday, except Wednesday, 9–4.
While the enormous brick complex, which stands high above the Isar River in Haidhausen, is being renovated (scheduled through 2026), the former Gasteig Culture Center has a new name, Gasteig HP8, and a temporary home in the Sendling district, south of the City Center. The Munich Philharmonic Orchestra performs in the Isarphilharmonie, a new modern philharmonic hall, and there are other smaller venues on the site accommodating musical and theatrical performances and films. The Gasteig can be reached in about seven minutes by the U-Bahn from Marienplatz to Brudermühlstrasse station (U3), and from there it's about a five-minute walk.
This highly regarded orchestral and recital venue is in the former throne room of King Ludwig I, with walls adorned with beautiful tapestries depicting the Hercules saga.
Münchner Kammerspiele-Schauspielhaus presents the classics as well as new works by contemporary playwrights in a beautiful art nouveau setting. Most productions have English subtitles.
