A couple of hundred yards from Viktualienmarkt is the upmarket Seven Fish restaurant. With decor reminiscent of New York, there is a delightful array of seafood dishes which change daily and a nice wine selection. You can either go for a lovely multi-course meal or choose the Japanese-influenced appetizers at the tiny bar. Sit outside if the weather is nice and watch the people go by on Gärtnerplatz. Reservations recommended.

I fall in love with this place every time I eat there. It's very Munichy - but without the kitsch. The location is ideal. The food is always excellent, as is the service... although not always friendly. Try the desserts, if you have room.

The Spatenhaus is one of the finest restaurants in Munich, and after eating there at least 20 times over a period of 10 years, I can say: I have never had a bad meal and never been cheated. The experience of the other reader/reviewer here is due to a misunderstanding of tax laws: The waiter was explaining the 16% Value Added Tax in Germany. It is now 19% (in Canada this is the GST, I believe). If you look at your bill, it usually says "inkl." beside the 16%, i.e.: the VAT is included in all prices.
I have found the Spatenhaus to be "best" after operas or ballets, and at times (though a little expensive for this) for a late-morning weisswurst when engaged in a shopping spree.
