Modest but very appealing, this is a great deal in a fairly expensive city. The pension takes up three floors of a fin-de-siècle mansion between the Siegestor monument, on Leopoldstrasse, and the university. An ancient elevator with a glass door brings you to the fourth-floor reception desk. Most of the simply furnished rooms face the impressive Arts Academy across the street. Rooms on the fifth floor are particularly cozy, tucked up under the eaves. Pros: a delightful and homey place to stay. Cons: if elevators make you nervous, don't use this old one; no restaurant or bar.

Siegestor is a charming pension without all the pretense. If you are looking for flash and contemporary, go elsewhere. If you want a tidy room in a quaint inn with a charming hostess, you will enjoy your stay. Close to bus and rail, dining, and attractions, what more can you ask.
