Behind the market square is the Kilianskirche (Church of St. Kilian),Heilbronn's most famous church, dedicated to the Irish monk who brought Christianity to the Rhineland in the Dark Ages and who lies buried in Würzburg. Its lofty Gothic tower was capped in the early 16th century with a fussy, lanternlike structure that ranks as the first major Renaissance work north of the Alps. Walk around the church to the south side (the side opposite the main entrance) to see the well that gave the city its name.
