Fischmarkt (Fish Market)

Fischmarkt (Fish Market) Review

A trip to the Altona Fischmarkt is worth getting out of bed early for—or staying up all night; it's only open from 5 to 9:30 (7 to 9:30 from November to March) in the morning. The pitch of fervent deal making is unmatched in Germany. Offering real bargains, the market's barkers are famous for their sometimes rude but usually successful bids to shoppers. Sunday fish markets became a tradition in the 18th century, when fishermen sold their catch before church services. Today freshly caught fish are only a part of the scene. You can find almost anything here—from live parrots and palm trees to armloads of flowers and bananas, valuable antiques, and fourth-hand junk.
