When to Go

Located in the often rainy and windy German north, Hamburg's maritime weather is actually better than its reputation. Summer temperatures can hover around the mid- to high 70°-F from mid-June to mid-August, and sometimes a surprisingly pleasant and warm spring (late April through early June) presents the city with vibrant, blue skies. Summer sees many festivals such as the Sommerdom, or the Alstervergnügen, and is certainly the best time to visit—even if this means solidly booked hotels and restaurants, generally higher prices, and sometimes crowded attractions. September and October are usually good months to visit as well, even though strong winds and rain or sleet will pick up in late October. Despite the many Christmas markets, the occasional winter storm might make a visit during the festive season unpleasant. January, February, and March should be avoided, even though prices will be lower in this off-season, but the often bad weather will prevent you from enjoying a city with many open-air attractions, such as the harbor, the zoo, and the river Elbe.
