Rotel Inn

Am Hauptbahnhof/Donauufer, Passau, Bavaria, 94032, Germany

The first permanent Rotel Inn (usually they are hotels on wheels), stretches along the bank of the Danube in central Passau and looks rather like an ocean liner—definitely for young travelers, but also fun for families. Its rooms are truly shipshape—hardly any wider than the bed inside—but they're clean, decorated in a pop-art style, and amazingly cheap. The building's unique design—a red, white, and blue facade with flowing roof lines—has actually been patented. "Rotels" were developed by a local entrepreneur to accommodate tour groups in North Africa and Asia.
