Getting Here and Around

Air Travel: Major airlines continue to serve western Berlin's Tegel Airport (TXL), which is just 6 km (4 miles) from the city center, while suburban Schönefeld Airport (SXF) is used mostly by charter and low-cost airlines. The Willy Brandt Berlin-Brandenburg International Airport, which has been built next to Schönefeld, will eventually open and replace them both.

Bicycle Travel: Designated bike lanes and relatively flat topography make Berlin a pleasure to explore on two wheels. The same traffic laws apply to bicyclists as motorists, and police have been known to give out tickets.

Public Transit: Berlin has an integrated network of subway (U-bahn), suburban (S-bahn) train lines, buses, ferries, and trams (almost exclusively in eastern Berlin) divided into three zones. Zone A covers central Berlin, B includes the suburbs, and C extends into Brandenburg. Most visitor destinations are in the broad reach of the fare zones A and B, which can be covered with a €2.60 ticket (valid for two hours). The €1.50 Kurzstrecke tickets are used for trips up to three train and subway stops. A day ticket costs €6.70 in zones AB and €7.20 for ABC. The Berlin WelcomeCard (see Discounts and Deals) includes unlimited public travel. Make sure to validate your ticket in the small yellow or red box on the platform---ticket inspectors may ask to see your ticket. Being caught without a ticket will get you a €40 fine.

Berlin’s transit authority BVG (www.bvg.de) has up-to-date information and a "Journey Planner" function in English. The free "Fahrinfo Mobil" app can also help plan your journey. Note that ticket agents and machines only take cash.

Taxi Travel: Berlin’s taxis are efficient and numerous. The base rate is €3.20, after which prices vary according to a complex tariff system. Figure on paying around €8 to €10 for a ride the length of the Ku'damm. You can flag a taxi on the street, go to a taxi stand, or order one by phone. U-bahn employees will call a taxi for passengers after 8 pm.
