The Alter Markt was once dominated by the city's baroque palace, heavily destroyed by Allied bombing in WW II and then blown up by the East German regime in 1960. Reminiscent of a similar debate in Berlin, Potsdam, too, has decided to rebuild its palace; the reconstructed structure will house the state parliment, and work is scheduled to begin in 2008. Thanks to private donors, the first element, a magnificent replica of the Fortunaportal, now stands proudly on the square.
