Staatsrat

  • Address: Unter den Linden, Mitte, Berlin

Fodor's Review:

At Schlossplatz's south end is the brick-and-glass Staatsrat (State Senate), where East German dictator Eric Honnecker worked. The stone portal to this building was one of the few parts of the palace that the East German government preserved. It's believed that it was from this portal that Karl Liebknecht attempted to declare a Soviet-style republic after the Kaiser abdicated in November 1918. Irony upon irony, this former Communist building is home to a private business university.

  • Metro: Hackescher Markt (S-bahn)
