Staatsrat (State Council)

Staatsrat (State Council) Review

At Schlossplatz's south end is the brick-and-glass Staatsrat, where East German dictator Eric Honnecker worked. The stone portal to this building was one of the few parts of the palace that the East German government preserved. It was supposedly from this portal that Karl Liebknecht attempted to declare a Soviet-style republic after the kaiser abdicated in November 1918. Ironnically, the former Communist building is now home to a private business school, the European School of Management and Technology (ESMT).
