The Westin Grand Hotel Berlin Review

This large hotel in a renovated East German building has a great location at the corner of Friedrichstrasse and Unter den Linden. Rooms have mustard-color floral wallpaper, easy chairs, and the trademark Heavenly Bed found at all Westin hotels. The inner courtyard view is of an attractive garden area with an unusual Dragon House conference pagoda. Soundproof bay windows make for a good night's sleep in any room. The marble-and-brass lobby is light-filled and enlivened with a piano and guests taking a coffee break at the sofas.

    Westin Grand Hotel Review

Excellent location and sleep in a quiet room. Great bed!!! Priced high but this is Berlin! Excellent small neighborhood restaurants within walking distance for dinner or breakfast. Stayed September 2009.

    Westin Grand Hotel Review

The former Grand Hotel had been the pride of the German Democratic Republic which wanted to demonstrate that a communist regime was able to build a luxury hotel. The project succeeded - halfways. So expect a few oddities when staying at this hotel which was taken over by the Westin chain.

Location: The location is excellent, right at the crossing of Berlin's main boulevard Unter den Linden and the Friedrichstrasse. You are right in the historical center, in close proximity to shopping, the Gendarmenmarkt, restaurants and entertainment.

Building: Make antiques and doric columns, made up from papier maché, characterize the atmosphere.

Rooms: The rooms are smallish, with small bathrooms, and are not quite up-to-date. Kind of 1980ties feel. Even the radiators remind you of communist times.

Amenities: The pool is circular, an odd mixture of luxury (with a man-made stream and waterfall etc.) and the ambiance of a high-school gymnasium. Some of the signage is still dating from the communist era ("wear a bathing cap").

Conclusion: This hotel is upscale, but not top-notch, I would say 4.5 stars. It is the right place for those who have a sense of history. This was the very hotel, where the communist regime accomodated presidents and kings and queens. Experience yourself, how it felt.
