Walking across this quaint cemetery in the shadows of old chestnut trees is like a journey through Jewish culture and tradition in Berlin. Founded in 1827 and officially closed for burials in 1976, the cemetery holds 22,800 graves and 750 prominent grave sites. Among the famous Jewish Berliners at rest here are the baroque composer Giacomo Meyerbeer (1791-1864), the painter Max Liebermann (1847-1935), and one of Europe's most important historical publishing figures, Leopold Ullstein (1829-99). Of the many elaborate marble mausoleums, that for banker Julius Leopold Schwabach is the most beautiful.
