La Muse Review

If you dream of a soul-restoring stay deep in the heart of Cathar Country journey to this village—once a medieval artistic center where troubadours wrote romances—and discover this unique manor house, sweetly set over a river valley on a precipice of a village perché. Little wonder many authors and writers have headed here for a chance to recharge their creative engines. A welcome respite from the oft-touristed environs of Carcassonne, this retreat now welcomes all who want to take a "big exhale." Whether you book one of the stone village houses (€750-€1,000 per week) or reserve the whole house (sleeps 19), you can enjoy the extensive La Muse "living" library, the expansive slate terrace and gardens, and the conversations with distinguished international artists or writers who have become "Muse-ers." Better, the village is only 10 minutes north of the famed Lastours Cathar castles and just a 15-minute walk from a great meal at Roquefere's Sire de Cabaret.
