Right on Chinon's most charming square—a picture postcard come to life with splashing fountain and a bevy of cafés—this sweetly agreeable hotel, two blocks from the medieval quarter, has been a hotel since 1577. Many regional notables lived here before the Revolution, when it became the Hôtel Lion d'Or, the first hostelry in the region. The wood-beamed guest rooms are comfortable and cozy; some overlook two tiny, flowerpot-bedecked courtyards, while others take in views that include Chinon's castle ruins. The restaurant, Au Chapeau Rouge (closed Monday and no dinner Sunday), serves regional cuisine, and there's also a brasserie for cheaper snacks. Pros: cozy; many rooms have balconies overlooking town square. Cons: small guest rooms/bathrooms; poor breakfasts. Nadia (reception)
