An Al Gore paradise—everything here is bio! From the "biological" cream and lilac paint, used to transform this medieval royal stable into a slick modern hotel, to the "biodegradable" detergents used for the tablecloths and bedlinen, not forgetting the "bio-gastronomic" restaurant (where fried/grilled food, preserves, and the microwave are banned). Half a mile from the village château, in a quiet street between Meung's busy main road and the Loire (some rooms overlook the river, as does the outdoor terrace used for summer drinks), this picturesque hotel—built around a spacious courtyard by King Louis XI (1461-83) as an upscale lodging for horses, knights, and blacksmiths—has a rose garden. The large-windowed guest rooms manage to be both minimalistic and charming, glowing in white-on-white and chic pastel hues and set with with fireplaces and tiled floors. The pink-walled dining room serves lunch for EUR 17 and candlelit dinner for EUR 32.50. Pros: magical mix of medieval architecture and hip modern decor; fascinating bio theme; top restaurant. Cons: prices jack up in peak season. Pascal (owner)
