Picture-perfect and soigné as can be, this gorgeously stylish hotel is lucky enough to preside over a Loire riverbank under the shadow of Amboise's great cliff-side château. Set within its own compound, this quaintly shuttered late-18th-century manoir looks like it's on sabbatical from a Fragonard landscape. Inside, the grand staircase, dining room, and main salon are all a-dazzle in daffodil-yellow silks and gilt-framed mirrors, with ruby accents of Louis Seize sofas and bergères. The standard guest rooms are pleasant enough, but try to spring for the showpieces, such as the Suite Prestige (in a stunning blue toile de Jouy). Camp complices Eric Deforges and Patrice Longet have made this hotel very chez soi, with all sorts of loving details—at night, you can even find the weather forecast for the following day on your pillow. At dusk, cap it all off by stepping beyond the French doors to the manoir's exquisite gravel terrace to enjoy a Kir Royal. Pros: historic style; calm oasis in town center. Cons: overpriced breakfasts; some rooms a little shabby. Mr Longet
