Set on a bank of the Loire and directly opposite the road leading up to Chaumont's château, this quaint edifice was—rather unusually for these parts—built in the early 20th century as a hotel pure and simple. Four stories tall, fitted out with half-timber eaves, the hotel conjures up the grace of earlier days. Today, happily, it's purring along as a reasonably priced option. The entry hall soars, the restaurant is cozy and friendly. Rooms were renovated in 2007 with cheerfully colored walls and crisp white bed quilts. The hotel does, however, front the main road zipping through Chaumont (with loads of traffic), so be sure to bag a room away from the street, preferably on the side facing the Loire. Pros: handy setting; good value. Cons: street-facing rooms are noisy; grouchy owner. Pascal (owner)
