The Musée du Gemmail, in the imposing 19th-century Hôtel Raimbault, contains an unusual collection of three-dimensional colored-glass window panels. Depicting patterns, figures, and portraits, the panels are beautiful and intriguing—most of the gemlike fragments of glass came from broken bottles. Incidentally, Jean Cocteau coined the word gemmail by combining gemme (gem) with émail (enamel).
