Fondation Maeght

Fondation Maeght Review

Many people come to St-Paul just to visit the Fondation Maeght, founded in 1964 by art dealer Aimé Maeght and set on a wooded cliff top high above the medieval town. It's not just a small modern art museum but also an extraordinary marriage of the arc-and-plane architecture of José Sert; the looming sculptures of Miró, Moore, and Giacometti; and a humbling hilltop perch of pines, vines, and flowing planes of water. On display is an intriguing and ever-varying parade of the work of modern masters, including the wise and funny late-life masterwork La Vie (Life), by Chagall. On the extensive grounds, the fountains and impressive vistas help to beguile even those who aren't into modern art.
