Giving substance to Riviera fairy tales, this extraordinary xanadu seems to sit just below cloud level in skyhigh Èze. Like a Hilton penthouse, medieval-style, this magnificent conglomerate of weathered-stone houses lets you enjoy "the high life" while turning your back on the world and drinking in unsurpassed sea views. Nearby are some of the fanciest rooms, little cabanon houses built into the cliff and exquisite in decor: stone boulder walls accented with Louis Seize torchières, peasant-luxe fireplaces with faux 15th-century panel paintings, chandeliered rock-grotto bathrooms. Nearly all rooms have exposed stone, arched windows, exposed beams, and brass touches, while even the cheapest (a pretty penny, nonetheless) are stylishly done up and have views over Èze's charming tile roofs. No fewer than three restaurants, ranging from the nicely affordable grill to the haute gastronomique grand dining room with its panoramic view, regale some of the world's most pampered citizens (and children, who love the house special, chicken in Coca-Cola sauce, which goes for EUR 30). The bar, newly done up with blazons and suits of armor in medieval baronial style is as cozy and luxe a perch as you can wish. The swimming pool alone, clinging like a swallow's nest to the hillside, may justify the investment, as do the liveried footmen who greet you at the village entrance to wave you, VIP-style, past the cattle-drive of tourists. Believe us, it will hard to pack your bags when it's time to depart this magical realm.

It's quite possible that no hotel in the world matches CdO's ambience, atmosphere, view and old-world charm. If there was a possibility of rating it "6" for atmosphere, we'd have done so. The rooms are generally small for the price, but elegant, complete and charming (though they need to get rid of the we-don't-trust-you hangers that can't be removed). The service is very good. And you pay for what you get, so it's not a bargain. But, for a memorable getaway, it's amazing. We chose it for our marriage, hosting 60 of our closest friends for the weekend, and it lived up to our lofty hopes and expectations for the event.
