If you've come from other regions in France—even western Provence—you'll notice a sharp hike in hotel prices, costly by any measure, but actually vertiginous in summer. In Cannes and Nice the grand hotels are big on prestige and weak on swimming pools, which are usually just big enough to dip in; their private beaches are on the opposite side of the busy street, and you pay for access, just as nonguests do. It's up in the hills above the coast that you'll find the charm you expect from France, both in sophisticated hotels with gastronomic restaurants and in friendly mom-and-pop auberges (inns); the farther north you drive, the lower the prices.
