Celebrated since 1984, France's national heritage weekend allows you free access to participating museums and sites that are often closed to the public. "Les Journées du Patrimoine" is usually the third weekend in September (see www.journeesdupatrimoine.culture.fr). During La Nuit des Musées (www.nuitdesmusees.culture.fr), usually on the second Saturday in May, hundreds of museums allow free entry, 8 pm–1 am.
