Vieux Pont (Old Bridge)

Updated 04/09/2014

Fodor's Review

The bridge, known both as the Vieux Pont and the Pont de la Légende (Bridge of the Legend), is associated with the legend of Sancie, widow of Gaston V de Béarn. Accused of murdering a child after her husband's death in 1170, Sancie was subjected to the "Judgment of God" and thrown, bound hand and foot, from the bridge by order of her brother, the king of Navarre. When the river carried her safely to the bank, she was deemed exonerated of all charges.
