Bordered to the west by the Languedoc and melting to the south and east into the blue waters of the Mediterranean, Provence falls easily into four areas. The Camargue is at the heart of the first, flanked by Nîmes and Van Gogh's picturesque Arles to the east. Here, the Camargue's hypnotic plane of marsh grass stretching to the sea is interrupted only by an explosion of flying flamingos or a modest stampede of stocky bulls led by latter-day cowboys.
