Tucked discreetly behind St-Trophime, this pillared enclosure is a peaceful haven, a Romanesque treasure worthy of the church and one of the loveliest cloisters in Provence. Next to the church portals, enter via broad wooden doors that open onto the Place de la République and cross a peaceful courtyard to the entrance. The slender elegance of its pillars contrasts gracefully with the florid decorations of the capitals, each carved with fine detail and a painterly hand. Even drapery and feathers pop into high relief. The clear dichotomy of Gothic and Romanesque styles—curving vaults versus delicate cross vaults—harmonizes beautifully, as does the cloister as a whole: you wouldn't be surprised to come upon Cyrano's Roxanne embroidering quietly in the light dappling through the oleander.
