This bridge is the subject of the famous children's song: "Sur le pont d'Avignon on y danse, on y danse..." ("On the bridge of Avignon one dances, one dances... "). Unlike London Bridge, which fell down in another nursery ditty, Pont St-Bénézet still stretches its arches across the river, but only partway: half was washed away in the 17th century. Its first stones allegedly laid with the miraculous strength granted St-Bénézet in the 12th century, it once reached
all the way to Villeneuve.
