Outside its otherworldly role Stes-Maries is first and foremost a beach resort: dead flat, whitewashed, and more than a little tacky. Unless you've made a pilgrimage here for the sun and sand, don't spend much time in the town center, except to visit the quirky Museé Baroncelli. On display are wonderful exhibits on Camargue traditions, plus a very odd-looking stuffed flamingo donated to the museum by its namesake, a 19th-century marquis who gave up all his creature comforts
to become a real salt-of-the-earth cowboy.
