Arguably Avignon's loveliest hotel, this famous landmark exults Provence in all its 18th-century charm and splendor. A former cardinal's palace (set, in fact, just below the Palais des Papes), it has been superbly restored, with interiors richly decorated with exquisite reproduction chintzes and toiles de Jouy and beeswax-buffed antiques—the Salon Rouge is a jewel lined with red-and-lime silk and warmed by chandeliers and comfy chairs covered with paisley shawls à la anglaise. The enclosed garden is a breakfast and dinner oasis, the central lounge a skylit and jazz-warmed haven. Guest rooms are both beautiful and comfortable and the luxurious marble bathrooms have deep soaking tubs and elegant touches. Half the rooms face the garden, the other half the palace facade; a few even have tiny balconies with rooftop views. If you're driving, get detailed directions; the entrance is tricky to find by car.

This is a truly lovely hotel. Right slap bang in the centre. The staff were wonderful. The decoration beautiful, with real style and elegance. Not sure the food in the restaurant was quite up to the surroundings, but lovely to sit in the garden here or in the old restaurant. The rooms have everything you could wish for and just perfect. One of the best hotels I have stayed in in france.
