Hôtel d'Europe Review

This classic vine-covered 16th-century home once hosted Victor Hugo, Napoléon Bonaparte, and Emperor Maximilian; regally discreet, it is notable for its walled, tree-shaded courtyard and an interior filled with Aubusson tapestries, porcelains, and Provençal antiques; guest rooms are mostly emperor-size, and two suites overlook the Papal Palace. The highly acclaimed restaurant, La Vieille Fontaine (closed Sunday and Monday), is one of Avignon's best and has deservedly earned a Michelin star.
