Held annually in July, the Avignon festival, known officially as the Festival d'Avignon, has been bringing the best of world theater to this ancient city since 1947. Some 800 productions—some official, others "off" and "off-off"—take place every year; the prestigious, big-budget showpiece every year is held in the cour d'honneur, the courtyard of the Palais des Papes. You can get information about the unofficial performances at the Web site for le festival OFF (www.avignon-off.org) —tickets go on sale in May (and don't delay in placing your order).
