A neo-Byzantine church, the largest built in France since the Middle Ages, that was started in 1852 and completed in 1893, it's remarkable for its marble and rich red porphyry inlay. Napoléon III ordered the 11th-century original chapel, the Ancienne Major (parts of which date back to Roman times), torn apart to make way for its flashy new replacement. All that remains of the old church are the choir and the transept: restoration continues, but it is in a bad state of disrepair.
