Place Lamartine

Fodor's Review:

You'll have to go to Amsterdam to view Van Goghs. But the city has provided helpful markers and a numbered itinerary to guide you from one landmark to another—many of them recognizable from his beloved canvases. Van Gogh resided in Arles from February 1888 to May 1889 and did about 300 drawings and paintings while here. You can stand on Place Lamartine (between the rail station and the ramparts), which is the site of his residence here, the now-famous Maison Jaune (Yellow House); it was destroyed by bombs in 1944. The artist may have set up his easel on the Quai du Rhône, just off Place Lamartine, to capture the view that he transformed into his legendary Starry Night.
