Between the Place de la République and the Arena, you'll come across the picturesque ruins of the amphitheater built by the Romans under Augustus in the 1st century BC. Now overgrown and a pleasant, parklike retreat, it once served as an entertainment venue to some 20,000 spectators. None of its stage walls and only one row of arches remain of its once high-curved back (it was not a natural amphitheater); its fine local stone was borrowed to build early Christian churches. Nonetheless, it serves today as a concert stage for the Festival d'Arles (in July and August) and a venue for the Recontres Internationales de la Photographie (Photography Festival).
