Espace van Gogh

Fodor's Review:

The most strikingly resonant site, impeccably restored and landscaped to match one of Van Gogh's paintings, is the courtyard garden of what is now the Espace van Gogh, featured in Le Jardin de l'Hôtel-Dieu. This was the hospital to which the tortured artist repaired after cutting off his earlobe. Its cloistered grounds have become something of a shrine for visitors and there are photo plaques comparing the renovation to some of the master's paintings, including Le Jardin de la Maison de Santé. The exhibition hall here is open for temporary exhibitions; the garden is always on view, and in spring and summer blooming flowers decorate the live canvas. Check out shows of contemporary art inspired by "Vince" at the nearby Fondation Vincent van Gogh, located at 24 bis Rond-point des Arènes. For more information about Van Gogh, see the Close-Up Box, "Van Gogh in Arles and St-Rémy" and Place Lamartine, below.
