15 rue Gaston Boissier, off Quai de la Fontaine, Nîmes, 30900, France
Character-filled interiors and a flavorful restaurant make this gracious old hotel near the Jardins de la Fontaine a local institution. Picasso, Ava Garder, and Jean Cocteau all stayed here, and handsome woods and rich fabrics in guest rooms try to live up to the legendary reputation, but spots here and there need some updating. The quirky Hemingway bar in the downstairs lobby opens to a delicious flower garden, and the gourmet Enclos de la Fontaine is one of the best tables in Nîmes (although over-elaborate for some tastes).
- richly atmospheric
- excellent location
- some rooms can be a little noisy, especially in summer
- grandeur said to be fading
