Sandwiched between casual cafés, this unobtrusive budget hotel is easy to miss, but its prime location shouldn't be overlooked—the Eiffel Tower and Champs de Mars are around the corner, and one of the city's finest street markets is literally outside the front door. Friendly and helpful, the staff is quick to share its knowledge. The bistro-style breakfast room next to the reception desk has machines for hot and cold beverages. Rooms have simple furnishings decorated in jewel tones and a few touches of leather. If you're traveling with infants, ask for a baby cot, changing mat, highchair, and bottle-warmer, all available at the reception desk.

    First let me say that we try very hard to be good, travel ambassadors. About the time we thought maybe it’s us we read the recent reviews on TRIPADVISOR.COM along with other websites and saw that lots of folks are complaining about the same issues. Apparently our recent stay at the GHL is par for the way they operate these days. We would never knowingly violate any rules or regulations. That’s not who we are. But in this case we unwittingly did so because this hotel not only doesn’t tell you or give you any rules, it sends you a hypocritical message about what you can and can’t do.

    From the start one irritation we had with our room was the toilet seat. It wouldn't stay up. As you got up it hit you in the low back every time without fail. Not so much a problem for us but I'm sure the neighbors got tired of hearing it slam shut at 3 am.

    Another critic was correct when they say the hotel is old, musty, dark and dreary. I have no idea where the furniture in their online promo pics came from because that certainly wasn't in our room and we were told we had one of the "best" rooms having been upgraded. We had a balcony room on the street front. The furniture was junk and the bed was the hardest thing we've ever tried to sleep on.

    Our shower was plugged for the entire 4 days of our stay. We complained every morning because only one of us could get showered at a time as it took so long to drain lest it overflow to the floor. Managements fix was to leave a toilet bowl plunger in the shower for us to us.

    The rooms are extremely small and our bath was obviously a converted closet. You could sit on the toilet, reach across the sink and touch the shower that's how small it was. For the two of us to get around the room one of us had to get onto the bed to let the other one pass. Some rooms have SHARED BATHS in the hallways.

    But the worst thing was the night that we spilled a drink on our bed. We did not know that food and drink were forbidden in the rooms. It was posted nowhere, no rules were ever given to us and no one said anything in spite of seeing us come in with pastry one night. Who would have thought it was forbidden considering they sell cola's and wine from the front desk? We've been around the world and never been in a hotel that didn't allow food or drinks in the room. When we immediately took the sheets and blanket down to the desk clerk he never said a word about no food or drinks being allowed. In fact he had 2 chances because we was the one that we had spoken to earlier when we returned with pastry, went to the desk and asked for 2 forks from the breakfast café. He never ONCE said a word. Anyway, he didn't want the sheets, but the best part was he WOULD NOT give us any clean sheets to sleep on. So we ended up sleeping on a bare mattress. He said he didn't have access to a linen room. When we asked if he could get some sheets from another room, he said all the rooms were taken. So NO SHEETS for the night. IS THAT HEALTHY IN YOUR OPINION? We had to sleep on a bare mattress.

    The next morning when we went to the front desk to leave for the day we were publicly chastised by the daytime desk clerk. This was the first time we were told no food or drinks. He said it's on the "yellow sign in the elevator". It isn't, we looked and took a picture of that sign. Then that night when we returned they told us that they would be charging us 35 euros for damages. What damages, the fact that they had to clean the sheets? Needless to say we told them we would not pay it since they didn't provide any replacement sheets so we felt we’d paid the price. But from that point on, every night that we came in thereafter and the morning we checked out they asked for their 35 euros for DAMAGES and we refused. Twice we asked to speak to the manager who never made himself / herself available until we got back home and they contacted us via email.

    The manager stated in their email “I was in a compulsory training during a week and was not able to be here when you checked out. I came early in the morning and late at night to check everything and I knew about the shower's problem. In fact, I called a plumber to come and check the problem. He did it and I thought the problem was resolved, as you told us again about that the next day, that is the reason when the made (sp. Maid) left the "tube" (plunger) in your shower because the guy couldn't come again before 2 days. About the rules, I am sorry if you don't like it but it is written everywhere (in the lobby, in the rooms and in the elevator) that food and drinks from outside is not allowed at the hotel and in the rooms. We have to do that because we are changing the carpets every year because of the guests who don't care about that. To keep our hotel and rooms clean we need some rules. Concerning the sheets, we have some of course at the hotel but the night when happened this problem, the night auditor was new and didn't know where it was. He didn't think that he could call me and told me about that the next morning so I showed to him where it was. I feel sorry again about the inconvenience.” (end quote) Needless to say they refuse to comp us for the night they wouldn't give us clean sheets. Tell you what Mgr, you comp us that night, we'll pay you your 35 euros for "damages".

    Believe me when I say the carpets are not being replaced yearly. I think the key here is “no food or drink from outside” can be taken in the rooms, but buy it at the front counter and it’s okay? We asked that question, along with “are we allowed to have water in our room?” to which the desk clerk only smiled but would not give us an answer.

    One morning at 7 am, having been out late the night before seeing the city lights from both the Eiffel and Montparnasse Towers, we were awakened by a housekeeper that was singing in the hallways at the top of her lungs. After several minutes we finally asked her to be quiet as we were still sleeping.

    And if the maids singing isn't noisy enough, imagine a street where you have street vendors. It's nice, quaint and very noisy. They begin their day around 5 am and they don't end until midnight. Then there is the cobblestone street noise, the nightly trash trucks and the delivery vehicles. It's quaint until the wee hours of the night when you're trying to sleep but can't get any because of the exterior noise.

    We would have left this hotel had it not been for the fact that they COLLECT THE FULL BILL UP FRONT when you check in, and we could just tell they would not reimburse the unused days. The staff clearly does not like anyone that isn't French. We weren't the only ones we saw them being hostile towards.

    But the worst thing we saw was the morning we left. Another hotel guest, who was complaining that her neighbors kept her up until 3 am with their partying, and the fact that the desk did nothing to stop it, asked the front desk clerk about the airport shuttle costs. She felt she was being overcharged. The hotel collects a deposit for the ride. We didn't know as it was our first time, but it wasn't hers. The rate she was being charged was different than her last stay. She questioned the desk clerk and the next thing we knew he came dashing out to the shuttle, shoved a brochure in her face, chastised her openly in front of the 5 of us that were in the shuttle and went off cursing her in French (like none of us spoke French). His behavior was completely uncalled for as she was polite in questioning, never called him names, was not accusing and didn't raise her voice. His behavior was deplorable but completely in keeping with the overall staff level of this hotel.

    Rue Cler is a great market street to visit, but this hotel will ruin any joy you have in visiting either Paris or the Rue Cler. We dreaded coming back to the hotel every night and since you have to give them your key every day when you leave and ask for it upon return, there is no way to avoid the staff.

    There are lots of hotels in Paris and this one is not worth the money, the harassment or the chance that it'll end up spoiling your stay in such a fabulous city. Come shop, eat and play on Rue Cler but stay

    The price and location were ideal. The rooms are very small, bathrooms smaller. The neighborhood makes it worth the stay for a short time. Service was average. Internet use has to be paid for. No food or drink in the room, strange.

    After staying there twice, there is no other hotel I would want to stay at in Paris. The rooms may not be very large but they are very clean and quiet. The staff are extremely helpful and the location on the Rue Cler is superb.

    Very poor commercial attitude / Penny pitcher- skinflint-niggard for the breakfast / many better hotels in the area Muguet, Valadon, Champs de Mars...
