Hôtel Bonaparte

$$-$$$, St-Germain-des-Prés

Fodor's Review:

The congeniality of the staff makes a stay in this intimate place even more of a treat. Old-fashioned upholsteries and 19th-century furnishings make the relatively spacious rooms feel comfortable and unpretentious. Rooms have refrigerators; you're invited to stock them with drinks and snacks. Services may be basic, but the location in the heart of St-Germain about 30 steps from St-Sulpice is fabulous. Light sleepers should request rooms overlooking the courtyard.

Miserable place

We confirmed a room with air conditioning for late April. When we arrived the temp was in the 80's and there was no A/C. We were given rooms on the second floor with large floor to ceiling windows... We have 3 year old twins and could not stay there because it was extremely dangerous not to mention loud. When we asked for other rooms and if there was A/C, they said no and too bad. They will not refund our money because we did not cancel within the 72 hours...we would have if we knew they would not honor what was on their confirmation.

There are better choices for the money

Stayed there several months ago after reading glowing reviews at Fodors and elsewhere, found it very disappointing. The good points are the location, rooms are a decent size for Paris, and bathrooms relatively modern. Bad points: shabby furnishings, carpet, and looking none too clean, even if they were; non-working refrigerator in the room; room was dark and drab with low-level yellowish light bulbs; repairs not attended to; owner/manager minimally friendly or helpful. They have a sign in the lobby to not expect them to be able to get a taxi for you. I've stayed in other budget-minded hotels that are cheerier, cleaner in appearance,equally-good location, and with more helpful staff.

Reasonably priced hotel with wonderful location

Posted by Lois from Long Island, NY on 2/9/06

We have stayed at this hotel a few times, and my daughter has had a few friends use it as well. I found our room, each time, to be spotless, though there were some frayed or worn carpets or accessories. On the last stay, there was a large square of ceramic tile missing from the bathroom tub area, but once again, everything was spotless. Our room had a full size tub with shower each time [different floors, but room was the same location on each floor, explaining the similarity of floor plan] On one occasion, my mother had also come along, and her room was long and narrow, and with a small shower in a small bathroom, but also spotless. The included continental breakfast was simple but good. It included a roll, a croissant, butter and jams, and your choice of tea, coffee, or pot of hot chocolate. When requested that it be brought to the room, it was always prompt. I will say, on our first stay there, we were unaware at first, that there was an included breakfast, and no one mentioned it till I inquired. The staff at the hotel was always friendly and helpful, if any directions were required. Perhaps the best feature of the hotel, is it's wonderful location. It is around the corner from St. Sulpice, and just blocks away from Jardin Luxemburg, in one direction, and the Seine and Louvre and Notre Dame in the other direction. Also, around the corner, are some wonderful bistros and cafes, our favorite of which is Bistro D'Henri. The area is full of many upscale shops. There is no doubt that this is where we will return to, when we visit Paris again!
